The three founders of a very successful brand in the Netherlands, who are all of African heritage, approached us to launch their flagship store in New York City. Centered around “pan-African pride and community," Daily Paper is a clothing company that embraces a brilliantly unique philosophy and style.
The clients fell in love with an abandoned, crumbling, shell of a building on a prominent corner in Manhattan. Its lease would be for five to ten years, at most, so the time limit, zoning, use groups, and subways below, determined the use of existing elements and whatever was salvageable.
The store serves as a celebration of the brand, its story, and to acknowledge the conscious and creative reuse practices embraced in Africa. The entrance has a ceremonious feel, with temple-inspired statues surrounding the central columns. A museum to Afro futurism. This motif continues throughout and compliments the Dutch-style gables, vaulted ceilings, African-inspired clothing rails, and seed-and-twig textured ceilings.
Because the staircase to the upper levels had to remain in the back we strategically added an interior column grid to support the fragile structure.
This allowed for a glass second floor and skylight overhead to make the visual connection and draw light through the space. Additionally, both the second floor and the roof encourage community interaction with a juice and coffee bar, inviting seating and open spaces.
The building's exterior features a unique facade made with over 7,500 soda cans, all cut in two and folded by diverse local communities. The design mirrors African beadwork patterns and serves as a billboard for the brand while making a positive environmental statement. In keeping with the sustainable theme, a student created a 12-by-6-foot mural using recycled newspaper, delivery boxes, and aluminum for the store to highlight their achievement of launching in the United States.
Since opening, we've been told that the stores presence and design multiplied the company's value captured major press and has been widely recognized for its unique and accurate reflection of the brand's identity. Anew little icon in New York City.
